National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)

There are three routes currently available to gaining an NVQ, they are:
OSAT which is On-Site Assessment and Training
SUP which is the Specialist Upskilling Programme (available via FITA only and currently just in the impervious category)

ON-SITE ASSESSMENTS (OSAT)
  • On-site assessments are carried out within the normal working environment and pre-qualification paperwork is also generally created at a location convenient to the learner.
  • Suitable for experienced workers who need to gain an NVQ without further training.
  • Can be completed within a minimum of 16 weeks.
  • Funding may be available through the CFA, CITB or other sources to support this qualification route. Please ask for details as funding is limited and conditions will apply.
SPECIALIST UPSKILLING PROGRAMME (SUP)
  • Only suitable for experienced floorlayers who would benefit from, or welcome some additional training.
  • The SUP is not available to new entrants to the industry.
  • The SUP has the added attraction that some of the evidence to support the NVQ is generated during training and so can make the creation of a portfolio and thus, the NVQ assessment process much quicker.
  • The SUP is delivered at the FITA training centre and includes five days of intensive training leading to a NVQ Level 2 through the OSAT route.
  • The SUP must be completed within 12 months of registration but can be completed much quicker if desired.
  • Funding may be available through the CFA, CITB or other sources to support this qualification route. Please ask for details as funding is limited and conditions will apply.

All skilled workers are increasingly required to obtain the appropriate CSCS cards to be able to work for clients and most main contractors. Many require them to gain access to site. In turn, to obtain a “skilled worker” or blue CSCS card, you MUST have an NVQ Level 2.
Other CSCS cards, e.g., the green (or “labourer’s”) card, are no longer accepted or renewed for those who are actively involved in the installation of floorcoverings. For further information on CSCS, visit their website at www.cscs.uk.com
